Meet the Gardeners
- Beth L. is a garden professional who lives in Waltham. In spite of having too much to do during the growing season, she can always find a few minutes to stop by the Pool Garden to tend her plot. Beth enjoys Japanese drumming when not in the garden. www.grovehillgardens.com
- Colin H. lives in Wayland and visits Waltham regularly to buy supplies at Agway for his chickens. He likes the idea of creating a garden to support community projects and will be donating plants from his own garden, knowing they’ll circulate into greater Boston community greening projects. Colin graduated from UMass last year with a degree in landscape architecture.
- Lucia D. lives in Waltham and enjoys spending time at the Pool Garden. The mature trees and big sky are pleasant companions while she weeds and mulches. She finds it easy to imagine how beautiful this garden will be in the near future.
- Mary G. has enjoyed many courses at the Landscape Institute, consults on garden history and landscape interpretation for Stonehurst, The Robert Treat Paine Estate (near the Pool Garden) and is volunteering at Garden in the Woods with plant labeling. She also enjoy hands-on gardening at home or for friends!! Mary has wanted to volunteer for COGdesign for a while, and the timing/location/objectives of this particular project all seemed like a fit. She lives in Weston.
- GWARC, Inc., a Waltham
nonprofit improving the lives of people with
developmental disabilities, is taking charge of a very
large plot in the Pool Garden. In addition
to providing a supportive environment and work opportunities
like BIS Mailing, GWARC encourages participants
to contribute to their community through hands-on service
projects. Taking part in volunteer
activities like COGdesign's nursery garden project, in
addition to building community connections,
contributes to self esteem and fun! www.gwarc.org
- Paul C. and his wife Amy K. live nearby and walk the grounds of the Espousal Center regularly. They've been noticing the floral display this season at the Pool Garden and wondered what was up. When they saw the notice in the local newspaper, asking for volunteers to help tend, they stepped right up. Paul is a painter of watercolors and expects that the garden will become a place of inspiration for him.
- Christina C. admits that she gardens very little at home, mostly giving moral support to her husband Sandeep H. Daughter Maya, 7, seems to be a budding gardener and sister Sophia, 3, enjoys pulling weeds. When Christina saw the notice about the Pool Garden in the local newspaper, she thought this could be a wonderful family activity. Sandeep is looking for more sun and the Pool Garden certainly has that. The pool's large concrete apron will also be a great surface for chalk art.
- Will you be next?
