Waltham – The Community Outreach Group for Landscape Design (COGdesign) invites you to view an exhibit of community-based design work on display at the Waltham Public Library through July 2006.
The exhibit features a master plan for the Espousal Retreat House and Conference Center, located on Lexington St. in north Waltham. Landscape designer Patricia McGinnis, a Waltham resident, completed the project as a certificate requirement for the Landscape Institute of the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University.
Designer McGinnis’ landscape plan for the Espousal Center improves the spatial organization of the 48 acres. She emphasizes the importance of “cherishing the gifts of nature” while addressing circulation, parking, emergency access, and pedestrian safety within the property. McGinnis also defines space for use by the resident religious community and for those who use the conference center and landscape for secular purposes. The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Inc., which meets regularly at the conference center, initiated the project; members are contributing plants from their gardens to create a bountiful cutting garden there.
Other projects on display in COGdesign’s library exhibit include a residence for low income elderly in Newton, a community garden in Dorchester, and a public park in Arlington.
COGdesign, a Waltham-based nonprofit, collaborates with community-based organizations to build and strengthen communities through green space improvements, and promotes a healthier environment through sound horticultural practices and the strategic selection of plant material.
